Dark chocolate avocado mousse

We all have a weakness when it comes to chocolate but as athletes, it’s best to watch what we eat and not fill our caloric intake with junk food. This naturally rich and creamy dark chocolate mousse may help satisfy those sweet tooth cravings and provide a healthy alternative to shop-bought products. The mousse can also be used as an alternative to Nutella for a spread on bread. Recipe on our blog.

Ingredients (serves 2-3)

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 3 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 100ml milk of choice
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract powder
  • 2 tsp. honey
  • Pinch of sea salt

Remove the flesh of the avocado and place all the ingredients into a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add 1-2 pitted dates or extra honey for more sweetness if desired. Dish into small bowls and decorate with various toppings (e.g. chopped nuts, berries, chocolate pieces etc.). For the best results, store in the fridge overnight.

For women, craving chocolate during menstruation may sound all too familiar but may not be a coincidence. Raw cacao powder is a potent dose of antioxidants and magnesium. Consuming cacao may be particularly necessary during menstruation to help manage PMS (e.g. mood imbalances, anxiety, trouble sleeping, breast tenderness, stomach pain) particularly due to its magnesium content (1) (2).

For all, magnesium is a crucial mineral in energy production, muscle relaxation and muscle contraction, therefore, acting as a pain reliever, sleep aid and a relief from constipation. Aim to eat chocolate with a higher cacao percentage (>80%) to ensure a higher magnesium intake and a lower sugar content to watch that waistline.
